Product Description

Bahrain, the site of the Middle East’s first oil discovery in 1932, is reclaiming its heritage. Following massive reforms implemented by Minister of Oil and Gas Affairs Dr Mirza, the island is expecting to treble production from its existing onshore field to 100,000 barrels per day through one of the Gulf’s biggest enhanced oil recovery projects. Four offshore blocks have been awarded to international oil companies including Occidental Petroleum, and Bahrain is especially keen to develop its deep, tight gas, at up to 6 kilometres below sea level. Always at the cutting edge of energy technology, in January 2010 Bahrain inaugurated the Middle East’s first carbon dioxide recovery plant.
Downstream, Bahrain is making great strides in diversifying its product mix. The construction of the country’s first lube base oil plant is ongoing, and the next round of upgrades at the Sitra refinery is putting dollar signs in the eyes of contractors. GPIC is eager to double Bahraini gas production, partly for use as a feedstock to produce ammonia, urea, and methanol.
The country is a model of transparency and openness in the region. After avoiding the recession, Bahrain is becoming an investment destination of choice and is set to lead the regional recovery. To understand the rapidly evolving energy landscape around this key Gulf oil producer, as well as the plethora of businesses under the umbrella of NOGA holding, read The Oil & Gas Year, Bahrain 2010.
